Bones

Do you know that an adult has 206 bones in their body? When you were born, you had 270 soft bones but some of them fused together (or grew together) so you will end up with 206 bones as an adult. That's still a lot of bones for us to take care of!

We need to make sure our bones are hard and strong. By getting enough calcium in our diets, it will help keep them strong. You get calcium by drinking milk, eating cheese, ice cream, and yogurt, just to name a few. What are you going to eat today to get your calcium for your bones?

Do you know where the tiniest bone in your body is? It is in your ear, behind the eardrum. It is called the stirrup bone and is only about 1/10th of an inch long. Now that's tiny!

Do you know what the longest and strongest bone in your body is? It is your thighbone or it is called your femur. It is the bone from your knee to your hip. That is a pretty long bone, isn't it?

I want you to think about how long your neck is — it isn't very long, is it? The elephant also has a short neck. Think of how long the neck of the giraffe is. Can you believe that your neck, the elephant's neck and the giraffe's neck all contain only seven bones?
