Volunteer Descriptions

- Office Volunteer — greets and signs-in visitors, makes deliveries to classrooms and assists with office projects as needed.
- Library Volunteer — assists with book check-in, check-out, re-shelving and assists children with book selection.
- Horseshoe Press — Horseshoe Press gives Mathews students an opportunity to publish their own book. This produces a wonderful memory, but it takes many volunteers to run the program. Volunteers work one-on-one with students during the editing and illustration process or assist in producing the finished book. There is also an opportunity to assist in typing books from home.
- YO Packet — helps assemble the YO (Youngest or Only child) information packets that go home each Thursday. The packets are assembled each Wednesday.
- Home Room Representative — helps plan, make, and staff children's game booths at the school's fall carnival. Other responsibilities include planning and supervising 3 classroom events and helping, as needed, with other grade level activities.
- Fall Carnival — helps set up, work, or clean up for the carnival.
- Primary Fund Raiser (Gift Wrap) — assists with implementation and distribution of gift wrap products in the fall. Distribution usually takes place on a Friday afternoon and Saturday morning in late October.
- Holiday Gift Activity — assists the chairperson with sorting and distribution of finished products. Distribution will be in mid-November.
- Field Day — Usually held in May. Children participate in outdoor games and water activities. Volunteer information will be sent home in the spring.
- Yearbook/Historian Committee/Class Photographer — assists in compiling pictures and helping with layout of yearbook. One volunteer needed per grade level to coordinate classroom photographers for special events and activities.
- Literacy Library — assists the Reading Specialist with organizing and setting up the Literacy Library. Assists in updating Microsoft Access database, labeling bookshelves and other clerical duties.
- T.E.A.M.S. — this program is an expansion of the language arts volunteer program that includes reading, writing and math, individually or in small groups. Training is provided. Job sharing is also available.
- Spirit Wear — PTA sells school shirts, water bottles, etc. during PTA special events to promote school spirit.
- Environmental — assists with various environmental projects including landscaping and grounds clean up throughout the year.
- Member Recognition — assists the chairperson with the Back to School Reception for new families. Also assists in welcoming new families throughout the year, which includes helping with quarterly meetings.
- Hospitality — helps with various functions throughout the year. Activities may include setting up, welcoming guests or serving at different functions. Provide side dishes or desserts for special occasions (holiday luncheons, staff appreciation, etc.). Be a Birthday Baker and help celebrate a Mathews staff member's birthday by providing a small cake or other baked treat on their special day.
- Decorations — helps decorate the school with various seasonal and holiday themes. Will require approximately two hours of time per theme, 4-5 times per year.
- ESL - English as a Second Language Volunteer — helps with children who use English as their second language. Various tasks as needed to assist the teacher. Special language skills are not required.
- Book Fair — held in the fall and spring (usually late September/early Octobera nd late February/early March). Help set up the displays and books prior to sale, help students during class visits or help with family night (perfect for working parents).
- Reflections — an annual National PTA sponsored multi-media art, literature, and music competition. You can chair, co-chair or assist the chairperson with planning, scheduling, arranging judging and hosting awards ceremony.
- Dad's Club — Dad's this is your chance to get involved! The Dad's Club serves food at the fall carnival, helps set-up for Art Night and Book Fair as well as hosting the Sweets for Sweetheart event in February.
- Multicultural Committee — assists the chairperson in promoting multicultural awareness in our school on Multicultural Art Night. The committee will help the chairperson with special events, interest groups and resource speakers. Multicultural Art Night is held in the spring.
- School to Life — coordinates after school activities (chess, art, etc.) and the Junior Achievement program. You can chair/co-chair this program, coordinate Chess Club or coordinate Art Classes.
- Junior Achievement — volunteers will teach students about business concepts. Five sessions will be taught lasting 30 - 45 minutes each. Training, lesson plans and all materials will be provided. You can coordinate the Junior Achievement program or be a Junior Achievement teacher.
- Art Night — assist children with various art projects.
- Health and Safety — assist the chairman coordinating Red Ribbon Week activities or coordinating the Kindergarten Bicycle Rodeo. You can also be a McGruff House.
